Who is Evelyn?

Evelyn Pérez-Verdía is a leading bilingual female strategist, and a Hispanic small business owner, with two decades of experience breaking the barriers between communities and those who wish to engage with them. She has been an advisor and collaborated with multiple local and national nonprofits, elections offices, grassroots groups, advocacy campaigns, and governmental agencies on messaging, communications, image, digital content and micro-engagement.  Evelyn is recognized internationally as the leading source for national English-language media with breaking the 2020 US Presidential election story about private WhatsApp channels in Spanish targeting diaspora communities in South Florida.

In 2022, Evelyn received the Woman of Impact Award 2022 in Civics from the non-profit organization Mujeres Latinas Impulsando a Mujeres Latinas recognizing her advocacy in protecting our democratic institutions.

She is currently part of the University of South Florida’s Dean’s Advisory Council, and also the Department of State’s U.S. Speaker’s Program where she gives workshops to journalists and civil society leaders in Latin America; among others, on the differences between misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation (MDM), and the current world effects of digital gender violence.Pérez-Verdía is frequently hired to train teams who need help in giving accurate messages to  diaspora communities with the cultural sensitivities each community deserves. Pérez-Verdía  has been invited to be a speaker at conferences such as The Aspen Institute (Aspen Digital), Johns Hopkins SAIS, The 19th,  The U.S. Southern Command 2019’s Public Affairs Conference, Florida International University, and the University of Florida, among others.  Evelyn has also been one of the leads in various symposiums such as Nuestro Futuro Symposium at Florida International University, a bi-partisan conference In Miami focused on educating others about the Puerto Rican community who had recently arrived after Hurricane Maria where a 1,500 poll about the Puerto Rican community in Florida was presented.

In a field where there are new and purported experts, there is no substitute for demonstrated knowledge and experience. That is why Evelyn often contributes to CNN en Español, Univision, and Telemundo, and has been quoted in the BBC, Bloomberg, NPR, Christian Science Monitor, The Associated Press, EFE, NBC, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Miami Herald, and Newsweek, among others, including her analysis of coordinated geopolitical disinformation campaigns in Spanish. Evelyn currently has a podcast called “Los Lectores” focused on information for Spanish speaking communities that wish to know how to become civically-minded citizens in our society which she is currently funding, and dreams to make better with the support of funding that may be available.

 

Evelyn is the proud bilingual mother of two Mexican-Colombian-American children, the daughter of the first American to arrive in Colombia in search of the deaf community where they came to understand that in Colombia there were over 70 different dialects of Sign Language based on their culture and surroundings. Since very young, Evelyn helped her Colombian mother with a yearly sponsored camp for deaf families who were poverty-stricken. Evelyn grew up between Colombia and Florida where she met her husband who is originally from Mexico City and is now  a U.S. Citizen.
